Offshore Navigator

Introduction:

Chart/Offshore Navigator is a "legacy application" as defined by Microsoft. It was designed in an era when applications did not have to worry about permissions, file storage conventions, etc. While Offshore Navigator, and Ofshore Navigator Lite will work properly in Windows 7, the user must be given certain privileges during the installation process, and maintain other privileges in order to operate the software.

The quick solution:

Add the user to the 'Administrators' Group on their machine. This can be done via the 'User Accounts' section of the Control Panel. The software will install and run properly without problems.

The more complex solution:

It is not always desirable to allow a user to have Administrator access to their machine.

1) Log into the "Administrator's Account", and install the Maptech® software & charts.
Once installed, right click the Desktop short cut for Offshore Navigator, or Offshore Navigator Lite, and choose Properties.
Click on the Compatibility tab, and please make sure that the bottom box "Run This Program as an Administrator" is checked.

2) Then set the "Restricted User's Account" level to Administrator.
Then Log off.

3) Log into the "Restricted User's Account", and again install the Maptech® software & charts.
Once installed, right click the Desktop short cut for Offshore Navigator, or Offshore Navigator Lite, and choose Properties.
Click on the Compatibility tab, and please make sure that the bottom box "Run This Program as an Administrator" is checked.
Then Log off of the "Restricted User's Account".

4) Log into the "Administrator's Account", and set the following Folders and subfolders permissions to be able to be Read & Written, modified by all users:
C:3D Charts
C:ChartKit®

C:Programs FilesMaptech®Offshore Navigator
-or-
C:Programs Files (x86)Maptech®Offshore Navigator
-or-
C:Programs FilesMaptech®Offshore Navigator Lite
-or-
C:Programs Files (x86)Maptech®Offshore Navigator Lite

5) Set the "Restricted User's Account" from Administrator level back down to the Standard level.

6) Set the Parental Controls to allow restricted users to use the software installed in
"C:Programs FilesMaptech®Offshore Navigator"
-or-
"C:Programs Files (x86)Maptech®Offshore Navigator"
-or-
"C:Programs FilesMaptech®Offshore Navigator Lite"
-or-
"C:Programs Files (x86)Maptech®Offshore Navigator Lite"

7) Log off of the Administrator's account, and log back into the restricted user's account and verify that Offshore Navigator (or Offshore Navigator Lite) will run.
